Westerplatte is quiet today — woodland, sea air and a few ruins. Without context it is easy to miss what happened here. With a guide the peninsula becomes one of the most powerful places in Gdańsk.
Why take this tour
In the early hours of 1 September 1939 the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein opened fire on the Polish Military Transit Depot at Westerplatte. Around two hundred Polish soldiers held the position for seven days.
We get there together by city bus or, in the warmer months, by boat along the port canal — the journey itself shows you the working harbour of Gdańsk.
